How to Sell a House and Leave Things Behind

Everything but the kitchen sink is a common phrase to describe packing up anything and everything. But for many homeowners, they have the opposite problem. Somehow, our homes have a knack for collecting things and filling up storage until there’s no room left in the house. Sometimes that can be the one thing standing between you and a quick sale.

Luckily, that’s exactly what SoldFast can take care of for you. We’re familiar with local reuse and recycle organizations in the markets we serve, and have the experience and patience to ensure every item finds a good home. Here’s how Nader helped Brenda Hardie and her husband break away from their unwanted items.

Ready to Move On, But Feeling Boxed in

Brenda and her husband wanted to sell, and were ready to sell, but just didn’t know what to do with all their stuff. They didn’t want to abandon everything for someone else to worry about, but they weren’t going to have room at their new home to store everything. So first, they needed to decide what all they were going to leave behind. While we didn’t want to pressure them into taking more with them, we did our best to share advice on what’s easiest to take during a move.

They didn’t really have a lot of other options, or enough time to get them figured out. Lucky for them, SoldFast strives to find these ‘above and beyond’ ways to support our clients. We saw this as an opportunity to support two wonderful homeowners in another transition, so our next step was offering to buy the property as well as take care of all their unwanted items.

A Cash Offer from SoldFast Always Includes Above and Beyond Service

The house itself was in phenomenal shape, even down to cosmetics, so no big renovations were required! These kinds of projects are just about as simple as you can get, but that never means we’ll get complacent. SoldFast keeps an eye on the details to ensure nothing ever slips through the cracks.

What You Can Do with Unwanted Household Items

Municipal waste programs – Your city or county government may offer recycling and disposal programs nearby. They can be handy for disposing of items from distressed properties, like houses with issues like mold or termites. Always check with your local/county governments for something like this.

Hobby groups – there may not be a lot that thrift stores take that local hobby organizations wouldn’t, but when you’re as active in our communities as we are, we like to donate what we find if we know it’ll get more active use. These are often things like athletic gear, furniture etc.

Staging – A tip for fellow investors and agents! We’ve got a box truck storage and other properties being shown, so we’ll sometimes add something left behind to our staging furniture and décor

The Sellers Needed to Move at Their Pace

The deal was done on their timeline, and we helped them sort through their things one last time to make sure they weren’t leaving anything good behind. Once SoldFast purchased the property, the second thing we did was complete another walkthrough in order to take inventory of everything the sellers chose to leave behind. We also started to reach out to local thrift stores and donation centers to find new homes for many of the items, and set aside others for eventual disposal.

3 Kinds of Items Thrift Stores May Not Take

  1. Small kitchen appliances may be either older and more dangerous or too finicky and prone to breaking down if you breathe too hard on them. Think like your fancy coffee makers, juicers, air fryers. Not only do these things see a lot of wear and tear over the years, but they can be gross by the time folks decide to donate.
  2. Highchairs and kids’ items may be rejected if they’re dirty and in bad shape. Safety and hygiene are incredibly important for infants, so they can’t take risks on some donated items.
  3. Damaged cookware, especially with visible rust damage and stains. These can also get rejected for cleanliness concerns.

If you’re tempted to store more items outside, remember that keeping them boxed up and out of the sun is only half the battle. Heat, humidity, and pest intrusion can still be an issue, and a major concern depending on where you live.

Short, Sweet, and to the Point!

After we completed the cleanout, the last thing we needed to do was find a buyer. Luckily, we knew of a realtor with a family looking for a house in the area, and we were able to connect them with this property just 11 days after finishing the cleanout. In our line of work, it’s pretty rare to have the process go so smoothly from start to finish, but it’s always great to see.
